For over a thousand years Anuradhapura was the capital of Sri Lanka, and the dagobas left behind from that era were, for centuries, among the tallest structures anywhere on earth. The city spreads across a wide area of scrub and reservoir, with ancient ruins set between living temples still in active use by pilgrims from across the island.

Arugam Bay has been on the global surf circuit long enough to have a reputation, but has kept the character of a small fishing village better than most places with that status. The main point break at the southern end of the bay consistently produces one of the best right-hand waves in Asia between May and September.

The Bentota River cuts inland through mangrove tunnels where kingfishers and monitor lizards are closer than you might expect, before the boat turns back toward a wide beach built for long, unhurried afternoons. The river safari here is one of the west coast's more quietly extraordinary experiences, the kind that stays with guests long after the journey ends.

Bundala is Sri Lanka's first Ramsar Convention wetland and one of the most important stopovers for migratory waterbirds on the island. Between November and March, flamingos arrive in their hundreds and the five interconnected lagoons fill with species that spend their winters here before returning north.

Sri Lanka's capital moves faster than anywhere else on the island, colonial-era arcades and Dutch Hospital boutiques beside glass towers and a seafront promenade that fills with kite-flyers at dusk. The city holds more variety in a single afternoon than most visitors expect, particularly around the Pettah market, the Cinnamon Gardens neighbourhood, and the wide green sweep of Galle Face.

Five cave temples cut into a granite outcrop above the surrounding plains contain murals that have held their colour for over two thousand years, covering every surface of the ceilings and walls with paintings of a density that rewards a slow circuit. The climb up is shorter than Sigiriya and considerably less crowded.

Ella sits in a gap in the hill country ridge that frames a long view south toward the coastal plains, visible from almost every guesthouse terrace and clearing in the area. The Nine Arch Bridge, a colonial-era railway viaduct crossing a valley of terraced hillside, is at its best in the early morning before the light flattens.

Galle Fort is a seventeenth-century Dutch-built walled city that has been continuously inhabited since its construction and has absorbed three subsequent colonial powers without losing the quality that makes it worth visiting: it is still a real place where people live. The ramparts at sunset, the cobbled streets inside, and the mix of old Dutch villas converted into quiet hotels and boutiques make it one of the more satisfying urban environments in Sri Lanka.

Hatton sits at the heart of the Dimbula tea-growing region at an elevation that makes the air noticeably cooler and clearer than the coasts below. The surrounding hillsides are terraced with estates producing some of the finest high-grown Ceylon in the world, and the light in the late afternoon, when mist settles into the valleys, is unlike anywhere else on the island.

Hikkaduwa's reef has recovered well since the 2004 tsunami and now supports a healthy population of sea turtles that can be snorkelled with directly off the beach, no boat required. The coral garden within a short swim of shore is the most accessible reef experience on the west or south coast of the island.

A high windswept plateau at over two thousand metres, Horton Plains is unlike any other landscape on the island: open, threaded with hiking paths through patana grassland home to sambar deer and endemic birds found nowhere else in the world. The circular walk to World's End, a cliff dropping nearly a thousand metres to the valley below, is best attempted before eight in the morning.

Jaffna is a different Sri Lanka from the one most international visitors see: a Tamil-majority city with its own cuisine, its own temple tradition, its own history, and a Dutch-built fort that has witnessed a sequence of colonial occupations and recent conflict that gives it a weight the southern towns don't carry. The city has rebuilt substantially since the end of the civil war and receives visitors with warmth and a quiet pride in what it has become.

Kandy holds the island's spiritual centre of gravity, built around the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, which houses the most venerated object in Sri Lankan Buddhism. An evening here, with drums sounding from within the temple and incense threading out through the doors, is unlike anything else in the country.

The Kelani River at Kitulgala runs fast enough through canyon rainforest to provide a properly engaging whitewater afternoon, the banks on either side so dense with jungle that the only sounds beyond the water are birds and the occasional landslide of stones dislodged by a monkey overhead. The location was once a film set; the river has since returned entirely to its own character.

Kumana sits at the southeastern tip of the island adjacent to Arugam Bay, and its vast mangrove lagoons and freshwater tanks draw one of the largest concentrations of nesting waterbirds in South Asia. Between April and July, painted storks, spoonbills, herons and hundreds of other species converge on the wetlands to breed, creating a density of wildlife that ranks among the most extraordinary birdwatching in the region.

Between July and October, several hundred wild elephants gather on the receding banks of the ancient Minneriya reservoir, a congregation found at this scale almost nowhere else in Asia. A single afternoon safari during The Gathering can produce sightings of two to three hundred elephants in one open landscape.

Between November and April, blue whales surface regularly off Mirissa in what is considered one of the most reliable whale-watching locations in the world. The boats leave before sunrise and the whales, when they appear, tend to do so close enough that binoculars are optional. Sperm whales, dolphins, and occasionally orca are sighted on the same waters.

Negombo sits minutes from the international airport but belongs to a different rhythm entirely: a fishing town built around a lagoon where wooden outriggers set out at dawn and return in the late afternoon with the same calm regularity they have kept for generations. The Dutch Fort, the fish market, and the wide beach make for a better first or last night than most guests anticipate.

At two thousand metres, Nuwara Eliya wakes to cool mountain air and rolling rows of tea bushes disappearing into low cloud, a landscape that looks more like the Scottish Highlands than a tropical island. The town retains a distinctly colonial character, with a racecourse, a golf course, and hotels that have been serving afternoon tea since before independence.

Pasikuda's shallow reef shelf extends so far from the shore that you can wade a hundred metres out before the water reaches your shoulders, making it one of the only beaches on the island where young children can swim without supervision over any significant distance. The bay is protected, the water is clear, and the beach stays wide and relatively quiet even in high season.

Pidurangala sits directly opposite Sigiriya and at roughly similar height, which means the view from its summit takes in the lion rock as its centrepiece at dawn, before the crowds arrive below. The climb involves scrambling rather than steps in the final stretch, but the summit is typically shared with a handful of visitors rather than several hundred.

Sri Lanka's second great medieval capital was abandoned eight centuries ago and never rebuilt over, which means the carved stone Buddhas and palace complexes here are exactly where they were left. Cycling between the ruins on a quiet morning, past water gardens and stone enclosures still shaded by old trees, is the closest this island gets to the feeling of genuine time travel.

You climb past ancient frescoes and a stone lion's paws to a summit platform that once held a full royal palace, with views over surrounding jungle that remain uninterrupted in every direction. Built in the fifth century by a king who chose a volcanic rock over an entire kingdom as his fortress, Sigiriya is still one of the more arresting things a person can stand on top of in Asia.

Sinharaja is a UNESCO World Heritage rainforest and one of the last significant areas of lowland wet-zone primary forest left in Sri Lanka, home to a concentration of endemic species, including birds found nowhere else on the planet. A morning walk with a specialist guide, moving slowly through the understorey while a mixed-species bird flock moves through the canopy, is the closest thing the island offers to genuinely old-growth wilderness.

Tangalle is the south coast's quieter option: longer beaches with fewer footprints, a fishing harbour that operates completely independently of the tourist economy beside it, and a pace that drops noticeably compared to Mirissa or Unawatuna. The drive east from Galle along the coastal road, through Weligama and Matara, is itself part of what makes arriving here feel like reaching somewhere worth reaching.

Trincomalee sits around one of the finest natural deep-water harbours in the world, a strategic prize that changed colonial hands repeatedly and is now a quietly extraordinary destination for guests willing to make the journey. The beaches around Nilaveli and Uppuveli are among the least crowded on the island, and the water clarity here puts the south coast firmly in second place.

Udawalawe offers the most reliable elephant sightings on the island: open grassland with few places for elephants to hide, and a population that has grown significantly since the reservoir at the park's centre was established. A morning drive typically produces twenty to forty elephants in a single outing, often in large family groups.

Unawatuna's appeal is practical as much as scenic: a reef-protected bay in a curved cove within easy reach of Galle Fort, calm enough for swimming in most weather. The reef offers accessible snorkelling directly off the beach without the need for a boat.

Wilpattu is the largest national park on the island and among the least visited relative to its size, which means a morning drive here typically involves very few other vehicles and a sense of the park as genuinely wild rather than managed. The landscape is built around a series of natural lakes called villus, which attract leopards, deer, and waterbirds in their own unhurried rhythms.

Yala holds one of the highest densities of leopards anywhere on earth, and a single early morning game drive through Block One regularly produces sightings that safari guests in other parts of the world spend a week working toward. The leopards here are habituated to vehicles and tend to behave naturally when observed, entirely indifferent to the jeeps nearby.
